Experts warn that the next generation of school shooters have grown up doing the active-shooter drills meant to protect students from them, Insider reports. Some version of active shooter drills are currently implemented in around 95 percent of America’s public schools and, according to a 2020 report by the US Government Accountability Office, more than half of school shootings in the country were committed by current or former students of the schools they targeted.
Meanwhile, a 2021 report by Everytown for Gun Safety found that active shooter drills in schools were linked to a 42 percent increase in anxiety and stress, and a 39 percent increase in depression among teachers, students, and other school staff. “The only thing these drills are doing to children is capitalizing on fear,”said Dr. Nancy Rappaport, a child and adolescent psychiatrist specializing in school-threat assessments. “It is absolute lunacy to think you can train children to defend themselves against someone with a semi-automatic gun.”
