An officer involved in the arrest and beating of Tyre Nichols, who later died, was previously accused of participating in a savage beating of an inmate at a county prison, Travis Loller and Adrian Sainz report for the Associated Press. The assault was so concerning that all 34 inmates in the cellblock signed a letter to the corrections director asking for the matter to be investigated, calling for him to step in and “put a stop to this madness.”
The officer, Demetrius Haley, was hired by the Memphis Police in 2020 despite his prior history. There is no national database of officers found guilty of misconduct. Haley has been charged with second-degree murder in Nichols’ death, along with four other officers, all of whom were assigned to the Scorpion unit, an anti-crime task force accused of using violent and illegal tactics.
