New Jersey Prison ‘Fight Club’ Scandal: Correction Staff Accused of Encouraging Violence

The Department of Correction has called the accusations "false rumors" and maintains that it has a "zero-tolerance policy" towards the exploitation or abuse of inmates.

New Jersey’s prison watchdog agency has received reports of staff at South Woods State Prison’s “Restorative Housing Unit” participating in acts of violence and encouraging fights between incarcerated people, Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg reports for The Appeal. The allegations have been forwarded to the Department of Corrections’ Special Investigation Division.

The Department of Correction has called the accusations “false rumors” and maintains that it has a “zero-tolerance policy” towards the exploitation or abuse of inmates. Meanwhile, New Jersey’s Office of the Ombudsperson says that it has seen a spike in complaints since the start of the year, half of which allege violence and abuse.
