As COVID-19 Deaths Decline, So Do Police Deaths: Report

So far, fewer police and law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty this year compared to 2021. The decrease is attributed almost entirely to a decrease in deaths from COVID-19, according to the mid-year Officers Fatalities report from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Some 129 officer deaths from various municipal levels across the country have been counted as of June 30, compared to 188 officer deaths over the first six months of 2021. Deaths from disease, like COVID-19, are considered “in the line of duty” fatalities if officers were exposed on the job. The number of officers killed in “firearm-related” fatalities has increased slightly nation-wide compared to the same time period last year, from 28 to 33, Reuters reports.
