Atlanta Gun Violence Program Teaches Students De-Escalation
The anti-gun violence awareness program launched by 100 Black Men of Atlanta could make a difference in a city that has experienced two consecutive and record-breaking years of violence.
An anti-gun violence awareness program launched by 100 Black Men of Atlanta, the local chapter of a nationally recognized nonprofit made up of professional Black men, is designed to teach students what to say and what not to say in confrontational situations, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The program utilizes 10 sessions that include conflict resolution, anti-bullying, avoiding violence in your neighborhood, understanding the police, the pitfalls of social media, and dating violence as kids act out roles and practice real-life situations.
The current campaign is the relaunching of an anti-violence awareness push that 100 Black Men led in the early 1990s, at a time when violence was skyrocketing in major cities nationwide, much as it is today. Atlanta tallied 157 homicides in 2020, its highest body count since 1994, and followed that up with 158 homicides last year.
