Biden Calls for Accountability in Killing of Palestinian-American Journalist
The U.S. has accepted findings that an Israeli soldier most likely fired the shot that killed Shireen Abu Akleh, and Biden has said he would continue to insist on a full accounting of her death.
President Biden called for a full accounting of the May killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during an Israeli raid in the West Bank, the first time he has publicly mentioned the incident during his visits to East Jerusalem and Bethlehem, reports the Washington Post. The U.S. has accepted findings that an Israeli soldier most likely fired the shot. Biden’s statement comes after the family of Shireen Abu Akleh demanded he call out Israel over her killing while covering a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank and requested a personal meeting with the president to discuss the matter and noted the call of the 57 members of Congress who have demanded a thorough, transparent investigation conducted by the FBI and State Department into Shireen’s killing.
