Biden on Sacramento Shooting: ‘We Must Do More Than Mourn’
The sheer number of people killed and wounded in the mass shooting in Sacramento this weekend suggested that at least some — if not most — may have been bystanders who had merely been out for the evening.
Calling on Congress to strengthen gun laws, President Joe Biden said the mass shooting in Sacramento this weekend demonstrated the need to implement a “comprehensive crime reduction strategy.” “We must do more than mourn,” Biden said in a statement issued by the White House Monday. “We must act.”At least six people were killed and at least 12 were wounded in the largest mass shooting in Sacramento, CA history, with law enforcement officials saying that the incident, which potentially involved up to six shooters firing as many as 72 shots, appeared to be gang related, reports the New York Times.
“These lives were not the only lives impacted by gun violence last night,” Biden said in his statement. “We equally mourn for those victims and families who do not make national headlines.” The sheer number of people killed and wounded suggested that at least some — if not most — may have been bystanders who had merely been out for the evening. At least one firearm, a stolen handgun, has been recovered and a video provided to KCRA-TV, a local television station, seemed to reveal what sounded like a semiautomatic weapon being used as well. The mass shooting was the second in just over a month in Sacramento after a father killed his three young daughters, a chaperone and himself in a church during a supervised custody visitation.
