Danger Lurks Where You Least Expect It…

We comfort ourselves with the thought that we will always be able to see danger coming. It’s a pretty lie.

When I was younger, I loved to jump on branches. There was just something satisfying in the way they cracked.

One day, I was walking with a friend through a field. It was around twilight, when I spotted this long, perfectly straight branch. Of course, I sprinted for it. I was a second away from stomping down with all my strength when my friend yanked me back. He was so scared that I didn’t even question why we were running until we were back at the farmhouse.

It hadn’t been a branch.

My dumb little self was about to jump on the back of a huge venomous snake. I’m alive today because he had been there to see the threat I missed.
