Applications to the Denver Police Department over the last five years have started to match up with the demographics of the city, KDVR reports. Although by small margins, some racial groups underapplied or overapplied in comparison to their share of the city’s population. While Denver’s population is 54 percent white, white people made up less than 50 percent of applicants since 2018.

The second-largest applicant group in Denver are Hispanic or Latino at nearly 28 percent of applicants. Between 2018 and 2022, applicants who identified as Black or African-American during the application process made up nearly 12 percent of candidates, while less than 10 percent of Denver residents are Black.
