Let’s Use Texas Abortion Law to Go After Ghost-Gun Makers: CA Gov

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for legislation modeled on the Texas anti-abortion law to allow private citizens to sue ghost-gun distributors, reports the New York Times. Noting that the Supreme Court appeared to uphold the practice, he said “If Texas can ban abortion and endanger lives, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives.” It was unclear whether the proposal was serious, since Newsom had earlier slammed the law as a violation of federal precedents, but a statement from his office said he had instructed his staff to work on a bill that would let citizens sue anyone who “manufactures, distributes, or sells an assault weapon or ghost gun kit or parts” in California. Mirroring the Texas legislation, the governor called for damages of at least $10,000 per violation, plus costs and attorney’s fees. “If the most efficient way to keep these devastating weapons off our streets is to add the threat of private lawsuits, we should do just that,” he said in the statement.
