Memphis Police Chief Previously Trained With Israeli Forces
Chief Cerelyn Davis and other members of the department's top brass participated in the training.
An old resume of Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis shows that she completed several training programs with Israeli police and security forces. Davis and her department have faced heated scrutiny following the death of Tyre Nichols, Alice Speri reports for the Intercept. Despite that history, when Davis led a department in Durham, North Carolina in 2018, Durham became first U.S. city to ban police training exchanges with Israel’s military after protests against the practice.
“Most people who call for more training as a response to abusive policing have little idea what that really involves,” Alex Vitale, a professor of sociology and author of “The End of Policing,” told The Intercept. “The kinds of training police are given in Israel is actually part of the problem because it encourages a warrior mindset in police and exposes them to practices that would be unconstitutional in the U.S.”
