Michigan Chief Releases Identity of Officer Who Killed Patrick Lyoya
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom named Christopher Schurr as the officer who killed Patrick Lyoya during a confrontation after a routine traffic stop on April 9, after initially insisting that he would withhold the officer’s name unless he was charged with a crime.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said he was acting “in the interest of transparency, to reduce ongoing speculation, and to avoid any further confusion” when he recently decided to identify Christopher Schurr as the officer who killed Patrick Lyoya during a confrontation after a routine traffic stop on April 9, 2022, reports the Associated Press. Winstrom changed course in response to passionate demands from Lyoya’s family and Black leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, after initially insisting that he would withhold the officer’s name unless he was charged with a crime. Lyoya’s family wants Schurr, 31, who joined the police in 2015, fired and charged. Prosecutor Chris Becker said he’s waiting for the state police report.
