The Boot Trend I Predict Everyone Will Actually Wear This Fall

Although much has been said about the return of party attire and "revenge" heels as 2021 is being hailed as the onset of the new "roaring twenties," I think it's safe to say that there's still an important place in our wardrobes these days for comfort and practicality. Don't get me wrong, I love a good over-the-top fashion moment as much as the next style person, but if you were to ask me what I predict people will actually be wearing out on the street and not just flaunting on their Instagram feeds, I'd have to say it's this fall shoe trend.

Call them boring all you want, but the grip that flat boots have on fashion right now is undeniable. All manner of flat boots from leather knee-highs to lace-up combat boots are having a moment right now. Thick, gummy soles AKA lug soles are an especially trendy feature of the season's coolest boots, but it's the overall lack of heels that I'd like to point out today. Oh, and not to mention, they're practical, too. Flat boots of all kinds had a notable presence on the fall/winter 2021 runways from Stella McCartney's elevated wellies to Ganni's contrasting green soles and were paired with everything from easygoing knit dresses to cool leather jackets, indicating their unmatched versatility.

Fresh off the heels of fashion month, it's already clear from the street style scene that flat boots are making an impact IRL, too. For further proof that they're the most wearable (and dare I say, best), scroll down to see the best runway and street style looks and then, of course, shop the best flat boots on the market, according to us.

Lug-sole "bucket" boots were a fixture in Celine's fall collection where they were styled in a refreshingly realistic way with leather shacket and hoodie.

Dion Lee's complicated cutouts may have been the stars of the show, but flat ankle boots help to ground the more tricky silhouettes.

Chunky-sole boots have become a fixture at Ganni and this season they reimagined the signature with a contrasting green sole.

Fashionable wellies continue to be a thing, according to Stella McCartney whose fall collection featured the all-weather boots with cool knit pieces.

Marry the boots' practicality with something more skin-baring like an off-the-shoulder crop top.

According to the street style scene in Paris, the way to wear flat boots this winter will be with a vibrant statement coat.

There's nothing the fashion set loves more than a good soft-hard balance in an outfit, and this formula of a voluminous dress and tough boots is a winner.

While lug-sole ankle boots are pretty much a staple, these knee-high versions are bubbling up right now.

An easy outfit you can copy over and over involves a trench coat, jeans, and flat boots.

A simple outfit formula I personally plan on re-creating over and over again this fall.

What did I say earlier about statement coats and these boots?

When it comes to this trend, the thicker the soles, the better.

Chunky black boots are the perfect finish to a trendier look.

Proof that flat boots aren't just for the colder months, either.

Leaving you with this stunning leather ensemble to prove that you don't need any heels for your outfit to make an impact.
