The Loincloth Bikini Trend I'm Terrified of Is Taking Over

A throwback like no other.

The Loincloth Bikini Trend I'm Terrified of Is Taking Over

Color me a little bit freaked out, but there seems to be a new swimsuit trend popping up everywhere, which I'm not sure how to categorize except as "loincloth-esque." Ruched or smocked, this body-baring swimsuit bottom style seems to be the bikini of summer for a certain subset of trendsetters. While I know it's a very specific look (one I'm still trying to decide if I can actually pull off), there's something weirdly intriguing about it.

Chalk it up to the ultra-high vintage-style rise or the fact that these suits redefine the idea of barely there tan lines, but I'm toying with the idea of trying one out. After careful consideration, I think the key is pairing your suit of choice with basics: denim cutoffs, a T-shirt, and basic sandals because in this suit, there's no need for any other statement clothes.

Since I know it's a bit of an intimidating style to try, below you'll find some of my favorite inspiration photos along with suits for you to pick and choose from (and for more swimsuits in a wider range of sizes, check out this story too).

Style this neon suit with simple pieces like denim and basics in black and white.

This color is an Instagram favorite.

This also comes in turquoise.

Yep, retro prints are everywhere right now.

The ultimate barely there bottoms.

Who doesn't love a fun print?

Swap your standard string bikini for this one instead.

The floral and ruffle details on this suit make it feel unique and statement-making. Throw on a simple white cotton dress and you'll be good to go.

Smocking is a cool alternative to ruching.

The prettiest shade of pink.

This sweet brand is a fashionable favorite.

This pop of blue, though.

This string bikini is a simple choice for a pool day. Top and Lucie Bottom ($79) available in sizes XS to L.

Emily Ratajkowski's swimwear line is a summer favorite. Top and Neptune Bottom ($75) available in sizes XS to L.

From the back, it's possible to adjust the amount of coverage preferred, though some swimsuits are more minimal than others.

Make a splash in this pink print.

This printed suit would look great with a straw hat.

This satiny suit is great for lounging in the sun.

Style this suit with a white skirt.

Yes, you can actually get in the water wearing this suit. Here's proof (swimming might still be tricky, though).

Zebra suits are trending for summer.

Add this strappy style to your rotation.

This waist-tie swimsuit is too good.

You can never go wrong with a neutral shade.
