While the criminal investigations against the former president will continue, experts say that Trump’s presidential build might muddy the water. While simply running for president doesn’t shield Trump from prosecution, which one expert said would mean anyone could then run for president to avoid the law, it creates a uneasy political context that could benefit him in the proceedings. DOJ officials have considered a special counsel to keep the investigations shielded from political bias moving forward, but U.S Attorney General Marrick Garland has not made a call yet.
