Walmart has filed a motion to dismiss a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) complaint accusing the retailer of permitting con artists and scammers to use its money-transfer services, the Associated Press reports. In its lawsuit, the FTC claims Walmart stole “hundreds of millions of dollars” from customers by failing to secure its money-transfer services for years.

According to the agency, Walmart failed to adequately train its staff, failed to notify customers, and used policies that made it possible for fraudsters to make purchases at its stores. Walmart had been ordered to return customer funds, and the FTC had asked the court to impose civil penalties on the company. Walmart says the FTC’s June lawsuit is an “egregious instance of agency overreach. “
