According to Uganda Police, the couple is accused of constantly torturing their 10-year-old foster child for “stubborn, hyperactive, and mentally unstable" behavior.
Nicholas and Mackenzie Spencer from Washington DC are being held at a maximum security prison in Uganda on charges of aggravated torture and aggravated child trafficking Andrea Blanco reports for The Independent. According to Ugandan Police, the couple is accused of constantly torturing their 10-year-old foster child as punishment for what they dismissed as “stubborn, hyperactive, and mentally unstable” behavior. Nicholas, a former congressional staffer, and Mackenzie, a former healthcare consultant, have fostered three children since they came to Uganda in 2017.
The investigation into the couple’s treatment of their foster child alleges, in addition to other charges, that the couple kept the child naked and barefoot, often forced him to stand in a tortuous position, an had him sleep on a wooden platform without a mattress. The couple has also been charged with child trafficking and could face the death penalty if convicted. Attorneys for the couple have reportedly dismissed the accusations.
