Bitcoin Trader Heads to Federal Prison
Mark Alexande Hopkins, convicted of financial crimes in connection with using the P2P cryptocurrency, called on the government to demystify'crypto law.
Mark Alexander Hopkins, also known as “Doctor Bitcoin” and “Rizzn,” is calling for clarity between states and the federal government on the law governing person-to-person cryptocurrency exchange and general usage as he begins a sentence of six to 15 months in federal prison in Texas one year after his guilty plea to financial crimes related to P2P crypto currency, Coin Telegraph reports.
“Delaware, Texas and Wyoming are actively promoting P2P crypto usage in such a way that they’re manufacturing hundreds of thousands of felons (like me!) every day,” Hopkins argues. “There needs to be a) clarity on how to be as compliant as possible and b) ideally a rollback of the overreaching guidance in the first place.” Hopkins pleaded guilty in 2021 to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business in a “cash-to-crypto” scheme, according to the Department of Justice, conducting transactions totalling in the millions in states where he was not licensed or registered to transmit money.
