Chris Magnus, the Customs and Border Protection Chief who allegedly initially refused to step down after butting heads with a number of Department of Homeland Security officials, submitted his resignation to President Joe Biden on Saturday. In a statement accepting Magnus’ resignation, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre thanked him on President Biden’s behalf for his forty years of service.
Last Wednesday, Magnus was told by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that he should resign or be dismissed following weeks of rumored dissatisfaction with his work and a Nov 1 letter signed by 16 Republicans in the House asking President Biden to request Magnus’ resignation, Daniel Lippman reported for Politico. In the letter, Magnus’ House critics zeroed in on statements he made claiming he spent most of his time in his early tenure in the role learning about the CBP’s role. Citing the current immigration crisis, the drafters argued that “there is simply no time for on-the-job training.” The CBP spot is a Senate-confirmed position, and it’s unsure who will replace him in the coming weeks.
