Buprenorphine After Opioid Overdose Could Clear a Path to Treatment: Study

A recently released study has found that administering the addiction treatment medication buprenorphine in the first few critical minutes after an overdose patient wakes up quickly alleviates withdrawal symptoms and results in a nearly six-fold increase in patients showing up for treatment within 30 days, reports Christine Vestal for Pew Stateline.

The study shows that 100 percent of overdose patients who accepted buprenorphine experienced rapidly reduced withdrawal symptoms. The treatment also took only a few minutes more than a routine overdose call. In Camden, New Jersey, one of the few places in the country where paramedics can utilize the treatment, out of 174 patients who received it, 42 percent of them have shown up for an appointment at an addiction clinic.
