Despite Taking 20 Guns off NYC Streets Daily, Crime is Spiking

New data released Thursday shows that every day in 2022, officers across New York Citry’s five boroughs take an average of 20 guns off the street, and arrest an average of 13 people on gun charges. Calculated through May 8, this amounts to 2,600 firearms and roughly 1,700 people arrested, the NY Daily New details. If this data trend continues, the NYPD is on track to seize more than 7,000 firearms and make 4,800 gun arrests by the end of this year. These figures are staggering increases from previous years — and despite the NYPD’s relentless investigating, it’s hard to say whether or not they’re making a dent in the crisis considering overall crime continues to rise.
