DOJ Earmarks $139 Million to Advance Community Policing
The grants supply immediate funding to 180 law enforcement agencies nationwide, allowing the agencies to employ 973 additional full-time law enforcement professionals.
The Department of Justice has set aside $139 million to supply immediate funding to 180 law enforcement agencies nationwide, allowing the agencies to employ 973 additional full-time law enforcement professionals to advance community policing through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.
“As law enforcement agencies across the nation continue to experience recruitment and retention challenges, we are proud to provide these resources to help alleviate those challenges confronting the profession,” COPS Office Acting Director Robert Chapman said in a statement.
Nearly half will use the funding to concentrate on creating legitimate trust between law enforcement and communities; 30 agencies will aim to handle high rates of gun violence; 26 intend to focus on other areas of violence, and 28 will focus Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program resources on combating hate and domestic extremism or sponsoring policy-based decisions to persons in crisis.
