FBI Reveals 2021 Hate Crime Numbers with Fewer Agencies Providing Data

The FBI released hate crime statistics for 2021, but the data is incomplete Nicole Sganga reports for CBS news. Participation in the data collection is voluntary, and several large cities provided no data or reported zero hate crimes. For example, New York, Los Angeles and Miami did not give data to the bureau. However, according to the FBI’s report, others, including Chicago and Phoenix, reported zero hate crimes in 2021.
About two-thirds of law enforcement agencies reported hate crime data in 2021, down from 93 percent participation in 2020. That decline comes as the FBI and the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics shift to a more detailed and comprehensive crime-reporting system, known as the “National Incident-Based Reporting System” or NIBRS. The new system offers much more detailed information about the victims and their offenders, such as race, sex and relationship.
