Florida Republican Joe Harding resigned on Thursday from the state’s legislature following the Wednesday release of a federal grand jury indictment against the lawmaker, known for his sponsorship of the state’s controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill. Harding was charged of wire fraud and money laundering related to a federal COVID-19 relief loan program for small businesses, Matt Dixon reports for Politico. Harding allegedly received more $150,000 in fraudulent federal pandemic assistance.

“I believe in Floridians and want what is best for them, and I believe their leaders need not be encumbered by distractions that are mine alone,” Harding said in a statement announcing his resignation.
