Illegal Firework Blast Injures Nine Police Officers in Los Angeles

The injuries came when illegal fireworks seized during a pre-July 4th-holiday sweep detonated. Six civilians were also hurt in the blast.

At least nine police officers and one agent of the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agency, as well as six civilians, were injured Wednesday in an explosion while attempting to dispose of more than 5,000 pounds of confiscated fireworks, reports Reuters. The seizure of illegal fireworks occurred in a South Los Angeles neighborhood during a pre-July 4-holiday sweep. The blast happened when police attempted to safely detonate a portion of the explosives. The explosion also damaged a number of buildings and scattered debris on the streets. The fire department said that city building and safety inspectors were evaluating damage to homes to determine “if anyone will be displaced.” One person, Arturo Cejas, 27, a resident of the home where police found the fireworks, was arrested.
