Maryland State Trooper Charged With Exchanging Investigation Details For Bribes

The FBI has arrested a Maryland state trooper for allegedly selling information on a police investigation to a subject of that investigation, Darcy Costello reports for the Baltimore Sun. Justin Riggs has been charged with conspiracy to distribute drugs, use of interstate facilities to commit bribery and use of interstate facilities to aid and abet drug distribution. According to the affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, Riggs was caught in an interagency sting accepting $1,800 from a suspect in exchange for a warning that he was about to be wiretapped and promising further police info for more money.
The wiretap info was a ruse, planted within Riggs’ team to identify the leaker. A spokesperson for the Maryland State Police told the Baltimore Sun that Riggs has been suspended without pay and that the department’s international affairs division has opened an administrative investigation into his conduct. Riggs is a corporal and has been with the state police for 10 years.
