Michigan Bill Could Give Parents Life in Prison for Providing Trans Care

A new Michigan bill would consider parents giving care-providing trans treatment to their children as child abuse, applying to anyone who “knowingly or intentionally consents to, obtains, or assists with a gender transition procedure for a child.” It extends beyond gender-affirming surgery, including hormone treatments and puberty blockers, reports Natasha Lennard in a column for the Intercept.

The bill comes as many GOP members have targeted the treatments. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. introduced a similar bill on the federal level, which over 40 Republicans have co-sponsored. Greene’s bill, like in Michigan, would make providing such care a felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
