Nationwide Thefts of Kias, Hyundais Surge Thanks to Social Media Challenges
Police found that teenagers and young adults were organizing into groups, putting out how-to videos on social media, creating songs and issuing challenges to others.
A surge of Kia and Hyundai thefts across the U.S, from Atlanta to Seattle, has been fueled by social-media challenges targeting certain models of the cars because they are so easy to steal and are then typically used for joy riding or to commit other crimes rather than being stolen to make money, reports the Wall Street Journal. The cars are easier to steal because they are equipped with traditional keys and can be quickly stolen. Unlike many other vehicle, they lack a chip that would prevent them from starting when the key isn’t present. Police also found that teenagers and young adults were organizing into groups, circulating how-to videos on social media, creating songs, and issuing challenges to others.
