New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Keechant Sewell says she is reinforcing the city’s crackdown on gun violence, noting that 500 cops began training this week for the city’s neighborhood safety units and that 1,000 officers are being deployed daily in the city’s subway system. Speaking at the annual “State of the NYPD” breakfast, Sewell said the new safety units will be placed in 34 commands around the city where gun violence has spiked, reports the New York Daily News.
Sewell reported that her anti-violence strategy includes daily 10 a.m. meetings with other city agencies, including corrections, probation, and parole. She also noted the continued efforts of NYPD Kids First, a mentorship and employment program viewed as a way to prevent teens from getting pulled into gangs. In 2021, 1,877 people were shot in the city, with 46 percent of the shootings classified as gang-related, while serious crime in the subway is up 75 percent so far in 2022.
