NRA ‘Corruption’ Merits Closing It Down, say New York Officials

In a court filing seeking to dissolve the gun rights group, New York Attorney General Letitia James said that the National Rifle Association has failed to root out rampant internal corruption, even after a bankruptcy case designed to avoid that obligation was thrown out, reports Reuters. James said the NRA’s concealment of questionable transactions, awarding perks to longtime Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre and other insiders, disregard of good governance, and evasion of accountability have “continued unabated” since she sued the nonprofit in August, 2020.

James noted that the NRA told the Internal Revenue Service for the first time late last year that LaPierre had “spent charitable assets to benefit himself personally” and that the group’s treasurer at the time wouldn’t sign an Internal Revenue Service tax form because several NRA officials wouldn’t ensure its accuracy. LaPierre signed the form, and the treasurer was fired soon afterward.
