Nikolas Cruz, the 24-year-old who executed 17 people and injured 17 in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, has been sentenced to 34 consecutive life terms in prison, one for each of the people he killed and injured, reports Patricia Mazzei for the New York Times. A life sentence, unlike a death sentence, means that Cruz will not return to court for any legal appeals. Families of the victims, who were allowed to address Cruz in court, had pushed for the death penalty, discounting Cruz’s defense lawyers’ arguments that his brain was damaged since birth.
