Officer Who Killed Daunte Wright to Rely on ‘Innocent Mistake’ Defense

Lawyers for former Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis police officer Kimberly Potter, who shot and killed Daunte Wright during a traffic stop in April 2021, and immediately indicated in video of the incident that she thought she had grabbed her taser, have argued in a recent court filing that the killing was an innocent mistake, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Attorneys Earl Gray and Paul Engh listed four defenses they plan to use in court: “innocent mistake,” “innocent accident,” “her perceived use of a taser was reasonable” and “lack of causation.” Potter and the Brooklyn Center police chief resigned two days after the killing. Potter’s trial is scheduled to begin on November 30, 2021, where she faces charges of first- and second-degree manslaughter.
