Police Rekindle Recruiting to Recover from Pandemic Shortages

Police departments across the country are rolling out new incentives to try and pull in new recruits. The country is facing a multi-industry labor shortage, and cities are starting to build out outreach and offer bigger financial incentives to recover from lulls caused by the pandemic and a flurry of resignations and retirements, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Overall, police resignations increased by 42.7 percent between 2019 and 2021, and the hiring lull has been accompanied by a wave of retirements as many officers age out. To combat this and start to rebuild their numbers, the city of Phoenix is offering a $20,000 bump in pay for new recruits, while the LAPD is offering housing allowances to help pay for recruit rents.
