Schools in the United States suffered 93 shootings that left casualties during the 2020-2021 school year, the highest number in two decades, according to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCIES). The 31-page federal report, which examines crime and safety in schools across the United States, also highlighted a rise in cyberbullying and abuse or disrespect of teachers, reported The Washington Post.
Nearly half the shootings resulted in death; the remainder produced one or more casualties. In contrast, there were 23 shootings that produced casualties in the 2000-01 school year. A Washington Post analysis showed more than 311,000 children at 331 schools experienced gun violence since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.
