Supreme Court Under Pressure to Adopt Code of Ethics: ABA Passes Resolution and Congress Re-Introduces Legislation

The American Bar Association passed a resolution this week urging the US Supreme Court to adopt a binding code of ethics similar to the code that covers lower-court judges. This move follows mounting public pressure and internal discussions among Supreme Court justices, analyst Joan Biskupic reports for CNN. Meanwhile, members of Congress re-introduced legislation on Thursday to create an ethics code for the Supreme Court called the “Supreme Court Ethics Act.” Increased public criticism has given the legislation more traction than last year when a similar bill failed.

“Congress must close the inexcusable ‘Supreme Court loophole’ in federal judicial ethics rules by creating and enforcing a code of ethics for Supreme Court Justices,” Sen. Dick Durbin said as he introduced the proposed bill on Thursday.
