Surveillance Video of Medical Transport Contradicts Police Statement On Alabama Custody Death
“We knew he was in jail, and we thought that was the safest place for him at the time,” one family member told CBS 42. “But it turned out to be the worst place for him.”
Video of Alabama man Anthony Mitchell being carried into the loading area of the Walker County jail shows Mitchell being carried while limp and unconscious, contradicting an earlier statement from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office that claimed Mitchell was “alert and conscious” when he left the jail for transport to a local hospital before his death. Mitchell then died in police custody on Jan 27. Mitchell’s family believes all video of their loved one captured by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office should be released to the public and has expressed their concerns.
“We knew he was in jail, and we thought that was the safest place for him at the time,” one family member told CBS 42. “But it turned out to be the worst place for him.” The case is being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and its findings will be handed over to the Walker County District Attorney’s Office once completed.
