Surprise Visit To Rikers Finds Improvements in NYC Jail Conditions

According to a group of city officials, an increase in staffing levels at the troubled Rikers Island jail complex in New York City has led to improved conditions for detainees, Bloomberg’s CityLab reports. the jail received a surprise visit Monday from New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and City Council Member Carlina Rivera. Although the jail is still dangerous, the delegation credited the change to the fact that fewer employees have called in sick. Right now, 12 percent of Riker’s corrections staff call out sick on average, down from 28 percent in January. According to Lander’s office, the rate of call-outs is still double the pre-pandemic level.
