The 8 Fall Trends Fashion Colleagues Won't Be Trying and What We Will Wear
Politely declining these.
Over the past few months, we've made predictions based on the fall trends we'll want to wear and planned out the outfit combinations we'll be trying. But now that we're actually placing orders for our cooler-weather wardrobes, we have to admit that, well, we've been playing favorites. Of all the new silhouettes we saw on the runways this season, each of our editors has cherry-picked the best fall trends that speak to them the most, and they will be prioritizing those top picks.
Naturally, we can't try every single trend we spot (nor would we want to), so we'll politely be declining to wear the eight fall trends you'll read about below. They simply aren't speaking to us as much as certain styles are. Namely, flat knee boots, simple slip dresses, and cobalt-blue pieces are currently filling up our carts and closets.
"Though I'm pretty much obsessed with the corporate officewear trend that was featured on the fall/winter 2022 runways, I can't quite get behind pinstripes. Ties, pencil skirts, and tucked-in button-down shirts, yes. But something about pinstripes just doesn't appeal to me. (Talk to me in a few months, and perhaps I'll have changed my mind.) One fall aesthetic that does, however, is the pretty trend, specifically all of the baby-pink pieces that will be popping up this season." — Eliza Huber, editor
"I absolutely love the look of waders—so cool and forward. But I'll probably hold off for now and favor taller flat boots or chunky Chelsea boots." — Bobby Schuessler, market director
"As eye-catching as all of the super-transparent dresses are from the fall/winter 2022 collections—including the sequined piece from 16Arlington Hailey Bieber recently wore—I'm not ready to embrace totally see-through clothing. A more approachable way to wear the translucent trend? Semi-sheer skirts, as endorsed on the Prada runway." — Kristen Nichols, senior editor
"I'm not big on wearing loud colors, but I was so excited to see that cobalt blue bubbled up in a number of fall collections, notably at Dion Lee and Christian Siriano. While Barbie pink is certainly having a moment right now, I'll be skipping the super-sweet hue for shades of electric blue. It's just as striking of a color to wear but also leans more timeless, so I know that any cobalt-colored additions to my wardrobe will have longevity too." — Anna LaPlaca, editor
"There was a lot of beautiful crystal netting on the runway, and while it's certainly a head-turning look, it's not something I'll personally gravitate toward this season. One trend I will be fully embracing are long, silky slip dresses. They're unquestionably chic and so easy to dress up or down. I'll be styling mine àla Bottega Veneta—with a sweater wrapped around my waist along with a large tote bag and boots." — Judith Jones, senior market editor
"Although I'm intrigued, I can't see myself embracing the maxi-skirt trend. At 5'4", I've yet to find a way to pull it off that doesn't make me look like I'm drowning in fabric. On a completely opposite trend note, I'm definitely on board with oversize leather (or faux leather) bomber jackets and am very much looking forward to adding one to my wardrobe." — Allyson Payer, senior editor
"As fun as it was to see excessive layering play a prevalent part of fall/winter 2022 collections, I don't think the look is for me—I'm too prone to overheating. That being said, there are so many standout outerwear trends worth adopting this fall. From heavy-duty leather jackets to coats with fuzzy fold-over collars to dramatic floor-length coats, there's an endless array of statement coats to choose from this fall to fit my many moods. I'm looking forward to playing with my outwear this season, as it's the ideal way to get the extra-layered look without all the extras."
"This fall, I'm really into all things suit sets. I have been seeing lots of blazer-and-miniskirt sets from Zara that I'll definitely be wearing until it gets too chilly for short hemlines. I'm also loving the look of a matching vest and trousers. Something about it feels office chic but also a little bit scholastic, which is always a vibe I like to lean into for the fall months. I know everyone is loving Samba sneakers, but I'm a little more into boots and loafers for fall. Bella Hadid looks so cool wearing them, but I'm going to have to pass." — Grace O'Connell-Joshua, assistant shopping editor
