UK MPs Say Their Justice System Has Lost Control of a ‘Spiraling Fraud Epidemic’

A UK cross-party justice select committee of MPS found that police and prosecutors were wrongly prioritizing traditional crimes over a spiraling fraud epidemic that they concluded the justice system was unprepared for, reports Rajeev Syal for The Guardian.

The committee determined that policing was inadequate to deal with the scale, complexity and evolving nature of fraud, with only 2 percent of their funding being dedicated to combating fraud despite accounting for 40 percent of reported crime. As a result, the number of people falling victim to fraud has risen by 25 percent in the past two years, with 4.5 million offenses in 12 months, and those numbers are expected to increase.
