Video Released of Deadly Michigan Traffic Stop

The violent climax of a traffic stop, brief foot chase and struggle over a stun gun resulted in Patrick Lyoya, a Black man, being fatally shot in the back of the head by a Grand Rapids, Mich., police officer last week according to four videos released by the city’s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, reports the Associated Press. The shooting was the result of a struggle between Lyoya and the responding officer over the officer’s taser, which had been deployed twice ineffectively. Video was collected from Lyoya’s passenger, the officer’s body-worn camera, the officer’s patrol car, and a doorbell camera. Prosecutor Chris Becker, who will decide whether any charges are warranted, objected to the release but said Winstrom could act on his own and that the public shouldn’t expect a quick decision. Grand Rapids police have been occasionally criticized over the use of force, particularly against Black people, who make up 18 percent of the population.
