Brittney Griner made a direct plea to President Biden to work to free her and other Americans detained abroad, in a handwritten letter delivered to the White House on July 4, reports the Wall Street Journal. “I’m terrified I might be here forever,” Griner wrote, according to excerpts of the letter. In response, the White House said that “the U.S. government continues to work aggressively—using every available means—to bring her home.”
The WNBA player has been detained since February, when she was arrested at Moscow airport for allegedly bringing hashish oil into the country while travelling to Russia to play for UMMC Ekaterinburg. She appeared in a Moscow court last week, where Russian prosecutors filed charges against her. Griner allegedly carried two cartridges containing 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hashish oil, totaling 0.702 grams, for her own personal use. These charges carry a sentence of up to 10 years as the U.S. prepares to negotiate for her release.
