A Chicago prosecutor will file to dismiss sex-abuse charges against singer R. Kelly in court on Tuesday after federal convictions in two courts are expected to keep Kelly in prison for decades on similar charges, Claire Savage and Michael Tarm report for the Associated Press. Kelly is appealing the convictions, which include federal cases in both New York and Chicago. He is currently awaiting sentencing in the Chicago case and serving a 30-year prison sentence in New York.
“Mr. Kelly is potentially looking at the possibility of never walking out of prison again for the crimes that he’s committed. While today’s cases are no longer being pursued, we believe justice has been served,” Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said of the decision. One alleged victim, Lanita Carter, condemned the choice to drop the case: “I have spent nearly 20 years hoping that my abuser would be brought to justice for what he did to me. With today’s announcement, all hope of justice for my case is gone,” Carter said.
