Jordan has seen a massive increase in youth suicides within its criminal justice system, Euro-Med Monitor reports. According to the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the hostility and isolation suffered by vulnerable young people housed in juvenile detention centers in Jordan has a long-lasting detrimental effect on their psychosocial and educational development.
Jordan’s Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) reported that in 2020 there were on average 270 adolescents imprisoned and given sentences in the same year that the country’s juvenile suicide rate increased by more than 30 percent. Monitors are now calling for the country’s criminal justice system to establish secure and therapeutic environments focused on reintegration into society and improving violent or aggressive behavior.
