Family of Killed Palestinian Activist File International Criminal Case Against Palestinian Authority
The family of a Palestinian activist announced Thursday that they have filed a case against the Palestinian Authority (PA) with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for "war crimes and torture" for the alleged assassination of Nizar Banat.
The family of Nizar Banat announced Thursday that they have filed a case against the Palestinian Authority (PA) with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for “war crimes and torture,” they announced on Thursday. Banat was a vocal Palestinian critic of the PA and its president, Mahmoud Abbas, and died in police custody in 2021. An investigation the family called “farcical” was held in military court and blamed a number of low-level officers for Banat’s death, a process Amnesty International described as a “smokescreen to protect those higher up.”
“The PA has been a State party to the ICC since 2015. Yet, it has always been devised as a protection against the crimes of Israel against Palestinians,” said the family’s attorney, Hakan Camuz, in a statement. “Sadly, under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority has become another oppressor for the Palestinian people, just as much as Israel.”
