Knoxville PD Credits Restructuring For Declining Crime

In Knoxville, Tennessee, Police Chief Paul Noel credits the department’s restructuring with the fall-off in most crime categories in the department’s year-end summary report, Wes Cooper reports for ABC Wate 6. As part of the restructuring, the Knoxville Police Department emphasized getting more officers out in the city and re-established the central police district in South Knoxville.
According to the report, murder dipped 15 percent in 2022, dropping from 41 to 35 cases. In addition, the department saw a 9 percent decrease in robberies, a 6 percent reduction in breaking and entering crimes and a 21 percent decline in car thefts in 2022. However, despite most crimes declining, aggravated assaults increased by 8 percent last year and non-deadly shootings remained the same at 78 incidents.
