NY Deputy Mayor Faces Gun, Fraud Charges

Acting on a tip that an illegal device had been delivered to Rockland, N.Y., Deputy Mayor Brian Downey, authorities found a stash of illegal weapons and more than 10 fake federal badges and credentials.

After authorities executed a search warrant on Brian Downey, a deputy mayor in Rockland, N.Y., they found a stash of weapons along with more than 10 fake federal badges and credentials, some of which had Downey’s name and photos, according to the Washington Post. Downey now faces multiple federal charges, included the illegal possession of firearms and fraudulent badges, identification cards and other insignia strictly authorized for law enforcement persona, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday in the U.S Southern District Court in New York.

He also faces several local charges for criminal possession of 10 or more unregistered firearms, 13 firearm silencers and 16 assault weapons. Downey’s home was searched following a multiagency investigation into the alleged purchase of illegal gun parts, says Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh announced in a news release last week. Downey was elected as Rockland County’s second in command in 2019.  A felony conviction would force Downey out of office. He was released from custody on a $250,000 bond.
