NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Resigns

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he will resign following a report from the state’s attorney general alleging that he sexually harassed multiple women, ABC News reported.

Cuomo said he will leave office in 14 days. Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, will serve the rest of his term, and will be the state’s first female governor.

“The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government,” Cuomo said at a press briefing.

Cuomo’s resignation follows calls from prominent Democrats, including President Joe Biden, that the governor step down. After Cuomo’s first sexual harassment allegations emerged earlier this year, he ignored bipartisan demands to resign, predicting the investigation he authorized state Attorney General Letitia James to carry out would exonerate him.

But that investigation ended in a very different result: the report found Cuomo harassed 11 women — nine of whom were state employees — and subjected some of them to unwelcome touching and groping.

In his news conference, the three-term governor, who also was accused of covering up COVID-19 deaths at state nursing homes, spoke directly to his three daughters.

“I want them to know from the bottom of my heart that I never did and I never would intentionally disrespect a woman, treat any woman differently than I would want them treated and that is the God’s honest truth,” he said.

Cuomo still faces the possibility of criminal charges, with a number of prosecutors around the state moving to investigate him, the Chicago Tribune reported.
