Unknown Substance Leaves Illinois Prison Staff And Inmates Sick

On Wednesday, 18 staff members and an unknown count of inmates at the John A. Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, Illinois were sent to hospitals in the area, John O’Connor reports for NBC Chicago. The incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police’s hazardous materials team. Many of those affected were treated and released from Hillsboro Area Hospital, but some had to be transferred for further observation and testing.

According to Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State County (AFSCME) and Municipal Employees Council 31 union, this reflects a larger issue growing throughout prisons, “The issue of exposure to harmful substances in prisons is increasing,” Lindall said,  “AFSCME has been sounding the alarm for months to tighten up the protocol for both incoming mail and visitor screening.”
