Chaotic Notifications In Alabama Prison Release
The plan to release hundreds of inmates in Alabama, most within months of completing their sentences, was derailed this week because of issues with required victim notifications.

More than 400 incarcerated people in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections were scheduled to be released into the supervision of the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles on Tuesday. That plan was derailed because of issues with the victim notifications required under the same law that will soon release hundreds of Alabama inmates who are close to completing their sentences, Alex Gladden reports for the Montgomery Advertiser.
That number dropped to 92 on Tuesday, and the Attorney General and DOC in Alabama have announced that those eligible will now be released on a rolling basis as victims are contacted. Alabama DOC Commissioner John Hamm said that nobody will be released under the 2021 amendment unless the victim in the inmate’s case, if there is one, is notified first.
