Congress Faces Revived Push To Pass George Floyd Justice In Policing Act
The death of Tyre Nichols has renewed calls for federal police reform, including the Democrats’ George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
The death of Tyre Nichols has renewed calls for federal police reform, including the proposed George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, Nicole Narea and Li Zhou report for Vox. The bill previously passed a Democratic-controlled House in 2021. In the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the public advocacy that followed in 2020, both political parties introduced their own versions of federal police reform legislation but neither could reach an agreement on how comprehensive such legislation should be. Ben Crump, a lawyer for the Nichols family, has urged Congress to pass the Justice in Policing bill.
Both Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Tim Scott (R-SC), who led unsuccessful negotiations on a police reform package in 2021, have expressed interest in continuing to work on reform. New legislation isn’t impossible even with a divided legislature: late last year, Congress passed a law to fund mental health de-escalation training for police across the country.
